Overview
Prisons are ground zero for trauma. When we bring trauma-informed practices to the men and women living and working in prison, we change the culture from one of control and punishment to healing and rehabilitation.
With a 66% recidivism rate, prisons aren’t working. 95% of the incarcerated will be returning to society one day, it benefits families and communities to have our citizens return able to function in society and trauma-informed prisons are the path forward.
In this webinar we will hear from Fritzi Horstman on the Commpassion Prison Project and how her work with Trish Cathcart – Magilligan Prison Team Lead: Start 360, has been rolled out across prisons in Northern Ireland. We will hear about the impact the work is having on staff and inmates and the profound healing and rehabilition that is being produced. We will also hear from Helen Watson and Carol Hunter- Speach and Language Therapists in Magilligan Prison and Maghaberry prison on how the project has shaped their work and the feedback from inmates.

Helen Watson
Speech and Language Therapist
I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) from University of Ulster in 2010. My career began in the Highlands of Scotland as a Paediatric Community based SLT and from there I obtained posts within school settings in Aberdeenshire and Oxfordshire before returning home to Northern Ireland. As a Registered Intermediary for the Department of Justice from 2022 I gained insight in to the large numbers of people involved in the Criminal Justice System who present with communication difficulties and the far-reaching impact this can have on their ability to, for example, give an account of what happened, answer questions accurately, follow instructions and ‘read between the lines’. This developed a real interest in working within a forensic setting and I was delighted to be appointed as the SLT for HMP Maghaberry in October 2023. My work within this setting is varied with a strong emphasis on working towards the environment becoming ‘communication friendly’ and staff being empowered to support those with communication difficulties
